From Canon and Gigue for Three Violins and Basso Continuo (P.37, T.337, PC.358)

Originally part of a larger work that included a gigue in the same key, this piece, from the Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706), has become one of the most frequently-requested pieces for weddings and other celebratory occasions. The Canon's elegant interweaving of the melodic line among three voices create a soothing atmosphere for its listeners. Guitarists who perform at such occasions, therefore, should keep this piece polished and ready to go..

Composer, organist, and teacher, Pachelbel, a native of southern Germany, created a large number of works for both liturgical and secular use. He was a major player in the development of the chorale prelude and fugue form that formed a staple of Lutheran worship music.

Spot Practice Clip:

The Ff# in the fourth measure of this passage is played with 2, instead of the standard 3, in order to make room for 4 to reach and slide on the first string to play A and B. Also. pay close attention to the hinge bar that is placed right after this transition. You will use the base of your first finger to play the G on the first string.
